Deus Absconditus and Love Letters from Outer Space is a collaborative collection of poems and paintings celebrating the ecstasy of romantic love. Brandi and Michael have been creating together since 2009, when many of these poems and paintings began to take shape. The acts of writing and painting facilitated a deep connection to a mysterious space, a sacred energy beyond the two of them, creating a third entity, both male and female, a singular voice that seemed to speak of its own volition. This multitudinous muse drives the work, a source of revolutionary joy, an erotic chaos that merges flesh and spirit.
In this wildly inventive book two artists, both poets and painters, wrestle with the hidden God in the title but that is only the beginning. The collaboration takes place in 77 love letters that are by turns carnal, hilarious, despairing, and philosophical. And ten of those letters are collaborative Chagall-esque paintings full of passion and joy. Did I mention the play? There is no end to the wonder on each page. The poems say, “The world seems like a rough cyst,” but love is, if not a solution, then a delirious engagement in all that world offers from “yellow-engined dragonflies” to “harems of bearded virgins.” As the poets say near the end of this book, “The match wants to burn.” Brandi George and Michael Barach are on fire with color, language, and a deep dive into the heart of what it means to love. This is an absolutely incandescent piece of art.

Entanglements of the mystical and the sensual overwhelm in the best possible way in this book—a real page-turner with an unapologetic tenderness for our beautiful world. Michael Barach and Brandi George have created an astonishing collaboration that embodies the love between poets, and I want to share it with everyone I know!

Turning the pages of DEUS ABSCONDITUS AND LOVE LETTERS FROM OUTER SPACE, I feel I’m witnessing an exchange of not just letters between lovers but important missives—proclamations!—from cave dwellers to their later descendants (meaning us). So much vibrancy here! These poems and images enliven and enlarge the physical world just as
beautifully as they do the secret thought-world.
